Four months from the world's most ambitious AI law taking effect, and the people who wrote it are already trying to water it down. That sets the tone for a week where the question isn't what AI can do, but who gets to decide.


EU AI Act: Four Months Out, Already Flinching

The EU AI Act's August 2, 2026 deadline for high-risk AI system compliance is close enough to feel real. Companies are hiring compliance officers, publishing readiness guides, and scrambling to classify their systems under the Act's tiered risk framework. The banned practices list has been enforced since February 2025. Violations carry fines up to 35 million euros or 7% of global annual turnover, whichever hits harder.

But the enforcement date might not stick. The European Parliament and Council are pushing to delay core obligations to December 2027 or August 2028 through the Digital Omnibus simplification package. MEP Sergey Lagodinsky of the Greens called out what he sees as the real danger: a non-retroactivity clause that would let AI systems deployed before the new deadlines escape oversight permanently, unless they're "significantly modified." He called it "a loophole" and "a weak spot."

The political math is tight. Any delay needs a formal agreement before June to take legal effect ahead of the August 2 deadline. If it passes, companies that rush deployments into the gap could operate high-risk systems indefinitely without meeting the Act's safety requirements. The world's most ambitious AI regulation may end up with a structural hole big enough to drive a fleet of unregulated systems through.

Deepfakes Go Official in the 2026 Midterms

The National Republican Senatorial Committee released an 85-second deepfake ad targeting Texas Senate candidate James Talarico in March. The ad featured a synthetic version of Talarico reading his own old tweets with fabricated commentary layered on top. UC Berkeley forensic imaging expert Hany Farid reviewed the clip and called it "hyper-realistic," noting that only a slight audio-video sync misalignment gave it away.

Talarico's case is one of at least five confirmed deepfake incidents across three states involving both parties this cycle. The legislative response is fragmented: 28 states now have some form of deepfake law, but they mostly require disclosure rather than prohibiting synthetic media in political ads. No federal ban exists. Fifteen deepfake bills have been enacted nationally this year, and 169 bills targeting sexually explicit deepfakes have been introduced. California leads with 21 deepfake-related laws since 2019.

The gap between the technology's capability and the law's reach keeps widening. When a national party committee openly deploys a hyper-realistic deepfake as campaign strategy, the disclosure-only approach starts to look like bringing a permission slip to a gunfight.

DOL Starts Building AI Apprenticeship Pipelines

While regulators debate timelines and legislators draft disclosure requirements, the US Department of Labor is taking a different approach: training people. On April 1, the Employment and Training Administration announced a national contracting opportunity to integrate AI skills into Registered Apprenticeship programs.

The initiative targets three priorities: embedding AI training into existing apprenticeships, creating AI-specific apprenticeship roles, and strengthening workforce pipelines in data centers, telecom, and advanced manufacturing. A national intermediary contractor will connect employers with training providers. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer said "AI is transforming every industry, and our workforce systems must evolve just as quickly."

The announcement builds on DOL's AI Literacy Framework from February and the "Make America AI-Ready" initiative from March 24. It's the unglamorous end of the AI governance spectrum: not banning or regulating AI, but making sure workers can actually use it. Whether earn-while-you-learn programs can keep pace with a technology that rewrites job descriptions faster than curricula is an open question, but at least someone is building the pipes rather than arguing about the water.
