Three stories today about the friction points where AI meets institutions it wasn't built for: peer-reviewed mathematics, the U.S. Army, and the blank slide you have to finish before a meeting.
Mathematicians say OpenAI's math results skipped the citations
Over the prior weekend OpenAI announced ten mathematics and theoretical computer science advances generated by its in-development Astra system, reportedly for around $2,000 in compute. Then working mathematicians started reading the roughly 250-page paper, and several were not happy with what they found. At least two flagship results appear to lean on prior published work that OpenAI did not properly cite. Steven Miller, a mathematician at Yeshiva University who argues the system reused his own research, told Scientific American the approach "points to research misconduct" and looks "completely systematic."
Worth being precise about the complaint. Nobody is claiming the math is wrong. The results seem correct. The dispute is about attribution and how much novelty OpenAI claimed for work that others had already done. An OpenAI spokesperson said the company takes "responsibility for the correctness of these results" and would make small updates to the paper "consistent with standard academic practice." The reporting itself doesn't settle whether the missing citations amount to misconduct or a rushed write-up, and no one has published a full audit of the remaining eight results. What the episode does surface is the norm that breaks first when a lab points a model at original research: not correctness, but credit. When a system trained on the whole mathematical literature produces a proof, tracing which humans it stood on becomes both harder and more important.

The Army just put AI agents to work on 9.2 million people's records
Salesforce announced that the U.S. Army Human Resources Command is the first Department of Defense organization to deploy its Agentforce AI agents, after the platform cleared Impact Level 5 (IL5) authorization. IL5 is the security bar that lets a cloud service handle controlled unclassified information inside defense environments, so this is not a public-facing chatbot. The agents will provide around-the-clock support to 9.2 million soldiers, veterans, civilian employees, and military families, answering routine inquiries, summarizing case histories, and surfacing policy and career information from approved Army sources.
Salesforce is careful to say humans keep the wheel on anything that matters. Complex questions about benefits or other sensitive decisions still route to HRC specialists, who retain decision-making authority. The agents handle the administrative layer. Still, the framing in the announcement is the tell: the company describes this as a move past predictive AI and chatbots toward "autonomous execution." That is agentic AI crossing from commercial customer service into a federal command's personnel system, at the scale of millions of records. The interesting question is not whether the agents can summarize a case file. It is how quickly an institution as risk-averse as the Army decided the administrative tier was safe to hand over, and where that line moves next.

OpenAI bought a slide startup to fix ChatGPT's ugly decks
OpenAI acquired NextSlide, a startup whose product turned prompts, notes, documents, or research into editable presentations, and moved its entire team onto ChatGPT. Founder Ahmed Beshry disclosed the deal on LinkedIn, adding that it actually closed earlier in 2026 and the announcement came "a few months late." Financial terms were not disclosed. Beshry is not a first-time founder taking a small offer either; he previously co-founded Caper AI, the cashier-less checkout startup Instacart acquired in 2021.
The gap NextSlide fills is a real and specific one. ChatGPT can already generate slide files, but they have tended to arrive as plain white decks with unformatted text boxes, the kind of output you spend twenty minutes cleaning up before anyone sees it. Read this as a team-plus-product acquihire aimed at one slot inside ChatGPT rather than a broad talent grab. It also says something about how OpenAI is competing in everyday knowledge work: Anthropic and Google already build slides inside Claude and Google Slides, so OpenAI gains ground only if its decks need less fixing afterward. Buying the team that solved "prompt to finished deck" is a faster route there than building it twice.
