White House Asks OpenAI to Limit GPT-5.6 Release Over Security Concerns
The Trump administration has formally asked OpenAI to stagger the release of GPT-5.6, its newest flagship model, restricting initial access to a small group of government-approved partners before any broader rollout. The request came jointly from the Office of the National Cyber Director and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Axios reported, and follows the president's June 2 executive order on AI security.
Under the arrangement, the government would approve access on a "customer by customer" basis during the preview period. In an internal message to staff, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the constraint, calling it "not our preferred long term model." The phrasing suggests OpenAI accepted the terms but views them as temporary.
This is a notable shift. Previous administrations encouraged voluntary safety commitments from AI labs but stopped short of dictating release schedules for specific models. The move effectively gives the federal government a gatekeeper role over commercial AI deployment (at least for GPT-5.6's initial rollout). Whether this becomes a template for future model releases, or remains a one-off negotiation, will depend on how the preview period plays out and whether other labs face similar requests.

OpenAI and Broadcom Unveil Custom AI Inference Chip
OpenAI revealed its first custom silicon earlier this week: an inference processor called Jalapeño, designed in partnership with Broadcom. The company is calling it an "Intelligence Processor," purpose-built to accelerate the large language model workloads behind ChatGPT and Codex. Greg Brockman said the chip went from concept to working silicon in nine months, with OpenAI's own AI models contributing to the design process. That timeline is aggressive by semiconductor standards and suggests the chip targets a narrow set of inference optimizations rather than general-purpose flexibility. CNBC noted that Broadcom handled the physical design and manufacturing coordination, while OpenAI defined the architecture around its own model requirements.
The move puts OpenAI on a path already walked by Google (with its TPUs) and Amazon (with Inferentia and Trainium). For Nvidia, it's another signal that its largest customers are working to diversify their chip supply, though Nvidia GPUs will likely remain essential for training workloads for the foreseeable future.
